3. Let's go

Start your challenge

Once students know what SmallSteps4Life is about, and have helped to choose and plan their challenges, then you're ready to begin! Below are some tips on how to launch it successfully so that everyone is on board.

  • Choose a formal start date and announce it in assembly
  • Help students to make a banner that can be displayed at the entrance of the school, so that students, staff and parents are reminded every day that the challenge is taking place.
  • Advertise the challenge on the school's electronic screen/display board - use this website to capture their imagination!
  • Encourage students to spread the word to their parents, carers and wider family. For example writing for the school newsletter and taking materials home to show their parents, carers and siblings. This website is accessible from home too!
  • If you've planned some whole school challenge activities (and we recommend you do) then announce these in advance so students and staff know when they're happening and how they can participate. One idea that worked well in a secondary school is to have themed days - such as Monday 'manners' day and/or Friday 'feel good' day. These can help to keep people interested and make it fun.
  • If you have made changes to school activities and services, such as additional healthy options on the menu, remind people these are available and encourage staff and students to spread the word.
